I am delighted to collaborate with British Garden Centres in supporting the Greenfingers Charity through my two butterfly-themed gardening project designs.
Both designs will educate visitors on the invaluable work Greenfingers does in creating beautiful outdoor spaces for life-limited children and their families who spend time in hospices around the UK. These gardens offer an escape, a place for play, therapeutic rest, and a place to create memories in.

About British Garden Centres
British Garden Centres is the largest garden centre operator in the UK by number of sites. The company was founded in 1990 by Charles Stubbs in the village of Woodthorpe, Lincolnshire. It began as a small venture, with Charles selling seedlings and Leylandii from a stall at the end of his driveway. Over time, the business expanded, with Woodthorpe Hall becoming the first official garden centre. The company flourished under the leadership of Charles and his brother Robert Stubbs, gaining a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service.
Today, British Garden Centres operates over 70 locations across the UK, making it a household name for gardening enthusiasts. The company has grown significantly through acquisitions, including the purchase of Wyevale Garden Centres in 2019 and Hillview centres later that year. Despite its rapid expansion, the company remains family-owned and continues to uphold its founding principles of offering great plants, products, and service at affordable prices. It has also embraced modern conveniences, such as launching an online store to cater to customers nationwide.

The Butterfly Garden
24-27 April 2025
Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate
The Butterfly Garden is a sanctuary designed to provide families with a sense of peace and solace. Drawing inspiration from the nurturing environment of Greenfingers’ hospice gardens for children, the garden’s layout and planting have been carefully crafted to create an atmosphere of comfort and enclosure.
At its heart lies an inviting arbour seat, surrounded by plants from British Garden Centres and edged with setts, encouraging moments of pause and contemplation. A winding gravel path leads to a fire pit with four lounge chairs, offering a space for families to gather, relax, and connect. The back fence, wrapping around the garden’s corners, symbolises embracing arms, providing protection and warmth. Two raised beds at the rear showcase elevated planting, layering colours and drawing the eyes of visitors.
The planting scheme celebrates diversity and nature’s charm, using vibrant colours and varied flower heads to attract both people and butterflies. Gravel planting softens the edges, while a wooden archway at the entrance welcomes visitors into this butterfly haven. Strategically placed feature shrubs add height and balance to the composition, creating a visually engaging and harmonious space.

This vibrant planted border is designed to attract and nourish pollinators, with a particular focus on butterflies. A colourful and textured display, it reaches its peak during the summer months, combining beauty with purpose. Obelisks add structure and height, supporting climbing plants, while butterfly boxes are thoughtfully positioned to welcome these delicate creatures.
A bench nestled within the border offers a tranquil spot to observe the wildlife and plants, inspired by the soothing ‘Butterfly Garden’ created for peace and reflection during challenging times.

Since its inception, Greenfingers Charity has built nearly 70 inspiring hospice gardens, with many more on the waiting list. The charity relies on the support of the community, fundraising campaigns, and donations to continue their work.
